Whilst I see what you mean and in part sympathise, the other part of me says that people are generally failing the sense of humour test these days. Both the movies mentioned were comedies, and comedies always end up “insulting” someone in one way, shape or form….. but without humour it would be very dullYes Kazakstan – made famous by Borat only, but most people I know took it with the pinch of salt intended and do not honestly believe that everything in the movie is “real”…. Borat is a really extreme example so it is obvious.As for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, I was in the US at the time it came out, and watched it with my best friend (half Greek) and her friend (100% Greek), both having grown up in Greece, and they found it hilarious and were literally in tears of laughter throughout the movie (and had many stories after the movies of families that were exactly like it, but of course not all)There have been other movies which have used other countries e.g. ever seen Eurotrip? It’s not exactly complementary or showing the “cultural” side of any of the countries there (including Germany)Unfortunately it’s a fact of life that some individuals don’t read up on all countries and what they truely have to offer, but do watch the movies and then sometimes make assumptionsEver seen the “quality” of questions that come in on the Travel-Netherlands section…… if you read that you would believe that 90% of Americans (and other countries) only know the Netherlands for Amsterdam, to smoke cannabis & indulge in prositution…… very frustrating when you live there, know what the country at large has to offer and also know Amsterdam for the other side of it as well!……… but that’s life as they say…. “ignorance is bliss”!
