Just because something is traditional doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. One of my old history teachers used to tell us a story about when Britain first colonized India. Two British officers were walking around when they saw a crowd of natives around a funeral pyre. They were about to light it when the officers noticed a living woman tied to it.”Hold it!” One shouted. “What is the meaning of this? What are you doing to this woman?”"Oh, it’s all right, officer. In our culture when a woman’s husband dies, we burn her alive on the funeral pyre.”"I understand that’s part of your culture.” Said the same officer. “But we have a tradition too. When we see people about to burn widows alive… we arrest them!”Sometimes it’s better to say something.

THEIR IS MORE TO THIS. IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT MONEY. THE REBEL DISTINCTION IS JUST GIVEN TO JUSTIFY VIOLENCE.Late on Saturday night, Aug. 26, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, the highly controversial tribal leader of Baluchistan, was killed together with his grandson, Nawabzada Baramdagh Bugti, in an encounter with the security agencies of Pakistan.Sophisticated satellite tracking equipment allowed the Pakistani secret service agencies to accurately pinpoint Bugti’s location and launch an intense attack. In the attack, 27 army personnel, including six high-ranking army officials, and an almost equal number of Bugti tribal members were killed.Bugti was better known by most as The Tiger of Baluchistan. He was believed to be the founding leader of the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BLA), which represented the violent side of the struggle by the Baluch people to gain rights that they claim have been denied to them by the Pakistani government. The BLA is fighting for an independent nation encompassing areas in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran that are dominated by the Baluch ethnic group. The group remains a great threat to law and order in Baluchistan, having recently been banned by the government of Pakistan as well as by the United Kingdom. The province of Baluchistan is rich in natural gas reserves and the government of Pakistan has invested heavily in extracting it. Over the past few decades, the Bugti tribe has complained of a lack of adequate compensation for the gas, with evidence that the Baluchi have remained uneducated and well below the poverty line. The government of Pakistan has strongly denied these accusations and accused Bugti of using the royalties for his own personal gain. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had strongly opposed Bugti’s demand for more royalties and had been forcing the leader to spend more money on the people of Baluchistan.Recently, negotiations for a potentially lucrative gas pipeline from Iran to India had ground to a halt, as even the Pakistani government could not guarantee the safety of the pipeline due to the constant looming threat of the BLA in the region. While it may seem to be a victory for the people of Pakistan, they must be forewarned of a possible counterstrike by the BLA or Bugti faithful seeking revenge. The extremist organization has previously been known to carry out attacks in Pakistan like the bomb blast in Karachi on Nov. 15, which killed 3 bystanders and injured more than 21 others.Only a military ruler like Gen. Musharraf could withstand the political ramifications resulting from the assassination of Bugti, as other politicians would have succumbed easily to any pressure. The important thing now for Musharraf is to round up rogue elements and slowly bring about changes in the region to reunite this integral part of Pakistan. At the same time, it is essential to remain sensitive to the feelings of the proud Baluchi nation, which may feel threatened by this sudden change of power.

Been happening for years with Turkey. The military coup in 1999 is what mucked everything up. Althought the president of Pakistan dissolving the parliament 3 times in about 5 years wasn’t a big help to stability either.

I agree with u. Really it’s very unfortunate.Islam means peace. But so called fundamentalists are doing such bad things which are not acceptable to majorities of Muslims.

The homeland of the Sunni Baluch in southwestern Afghanistan is in the sparsely settled deserts and semi-deserts of Hilmand Province, although Baluch enclaves are also found in northwestern Faryab Province. These semisedentary and seminomadic populations are famed for camel breeding. They number perhaps around 100,000, although other estimates are lower. Seventy percent of the Baluch live in Pakistan; others reside in Iran. The Baluch speak Baluchi, an Iranian branch in the Indo-European language family; most speak Dari and Pashto as well. Baluch society is tribal, highly segmented and centrally organized under powerful chieftains known as sardars.

Keep in mind that US is telling the Pakis to back off of India.Do we do that with a bit of aid? yes. We understand there is a delicate situation there and frankly the Pakis are walking a very thin line.Take the high road. Consider the end result. Keep your chin up and keep the north free of terrorists.
